Feng Shui Bathroom Cures: Stop Flushing Your Wealth Away

By Master Feng Hua Wang · June 23, 2026 · 5 min read

In Feng Shui, bathrooms are the most energetically challenging rooms in any home. Water drains downward through pipes. Toilets flush. Every time water leaves your home, it symbolically carries wealth, health, and vital energy with it. This isn't superstition — it's the Five Element principle: Water governs the flow of money and resources. When Water is constantly draining, so is your financial flow.

The most serious situation — and the one I get asked about most — is a bathroom in the wealth corner (Southeast). But even a bathroom in a neutral location needs cures. Here are seven remedies, from simplest to most involved.

1. Close the Door — Always

The single most effective bathroom cure is also the cheapest: keep the bathroom door closed at all times. When the door is open, draining Qi escapes into the rest of the home. A self-closing hinge costs $10. Install one. Every family member must be trained: you close the door when you leave. No exceptions.

2. Keep the Toilet Lid Down

An open toilet bowl is an open drain. When you flush with the lid up, you're not just sending water down — you're creating a vortex that pulls surrounding Qi with it. The lid down is a seal. It takes half a second. Make it a household rule.

3. Add the Earth Element to Block Water Drainage

In the Five Element cycle, Earth controls Water (土克水). To suppress the excessive Water energy in a bathroom, introduce Earth-element objects: ceramic containers (not plastic), earthy colors (beige, tan, terracotta towels or bath mat), square tiles or square-patterned accessories, stones or river rocks in a decorative dish.

4. Use Plants to Absorb Excess Water

Plants (Wood element) absorb Water in the productive cycle — Water nourishes Wood. A healthy plant in the bathroom turns a draining problem into a growing benefit. Golden Pothos and peace lilies are ideal because they thrive in humidity. A live plant is far more effective than any inanimate cure. Just keep it healthy — a dying bathroom plant broadcasts "dying wealth."

5. Place a Full-Length Mirror on the OUTSIDE of the Bathroom Door

This is a classic lineage remedy. The mirror makes the bathroom door "disappear" energetically — it reflects the hallway or room back to itself, pushing the bathroom's draining Qi back inside where it belongs. Crucially, the mirror must be on the outside — never on the inside facing out, which would amplify the drain.

6. Add a Bright Light — Leave It On

Darkness + Water = stagnant Yin energy. Bathrooms tend toward Yin (small windows, cool surfaces, moisture). Combat this with Yang energy: a bright light that stays on for at least a few hours every day. If you install a motion-sensor light, make sure the timer keeps it on for 15+ minutes after you leave. A dim, cave-like bathroom is an energetic black hole.

7. For Bathrooms IN the Wealth Corner: The Triple Cure

If your bathroom sits in the Southeast sector of your home — the Xun Palace, the wealth corner — you need all of the above plus these three additional measures:

  • Nine gold coins tied with red ribbon, placed on a high shelf or above the door frame. The number 9 represents ultimate Yang prosperity.
  • A round, leafy plant (jade plant or peace lily) on the bathroom counter. This is non-negotiable for wealth-corner bathrooms.
  • A saltwater cure: Fill a small glass bowl with sea salt and water. Place it in a corner of the bathroom that's not visible from the door. Replace the saltwater monthly. The salt absorbs negative energy; the water element is already present. When you discard the old saltwater, visualize stagnant financial patterns leaving with it.

If your front door opens to reveal even a sliver of the bathroom — the edge of the sink, a glimpse of the toilet — wealth is symbolically flushing before it enters. Fix with a self-closing bathroom door, a screen or curtain in the hallway blocking the sightline, or a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door as described above.

Every bathroom has a cure

In twenty years of practice, I've never encountered a bathroom problem that couldn't be remedied. The key is knowing exactly what you're dealing with — the compass direction, the Flying Star number that landed in that sector, and how it interacts with your personal BaZi. A Space Scan gives you the full diagnosis and a room-by-room cure plan.
