What the Four Pillars Represent

Each pillar contains two characters: a Heavenly Stem (天干) on top and an Earthly Branch (地支) below. Together, the four pillars give you eight characters — hence the name BaZi (Eight Characters).
The Heavenly Stems: Your Surface Personality
There are ten Heavenly Stems, cycling through the five elements in their Yang and Yin forms:

The Day Master: Your Core Self
The most important character in your chart is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar — your Day Master (日元). This represents you: your core personality, your decision-making style, and your fundamental elemental nature.
To read a chart, you first identify the Day Master. Then you evaluate every other character in the chart relative to it, using the Ten Gods (十神) system — a set of relationships that describe how each element interacts with your Day Master.
"日主为君，其余为臣" — The Day Master is the ruler; all other characters are ministers. A balanced chart is like a well-run court: no single minister dominates the ruler.
The Earthly Branches: Your Hidden Self
Twelve Earthly Branches correspond to the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. But they are more than just animal signs — each Branch contains one to three Hidden Stems (藏干), revealing the deeper layers of your personality that casual acquaintances never see.
For example, the Branch 午 (Wu, Horse) is a Fire branch — but it hides 丁 (Yin Fire) and 己 (Yin Earth) inside. This means a person born in the Year of the Horse carries Fire energy on the surface, with hidden Earth qualities that emerge in close relationships.
How to Get Your BaZi Chart
You need four pieces of information: year, month, day, and hour of birth. The hour is critical — changing the hour pillar changes up to 25% of your reading. If you do not know your birth hour, ask family members or check old records. Without it, the reading is incomplete.
Free online calculators can plot the eight characters for you. But a calculator only gives you the chart — it does not tell you what it means. Meaning comes from understanding the interactions: which elements clash, which combine, which support or weaken your Day Master.
That is where a professional reading differs: it explains why certain years felt heavy, why certain relationships drained you, and — most practically — when your next favorable energy window opens.
