Your desk is your personal power station. The single most important rule in office feng shui is the Command Position (司令位): sit where you can see the door, with your back against a solid wall, as far from the entrance as possible.
1. Back to a solid wall (not window, not partition) — this is your mountain support.
2. Can see the door from your seated position — face the opportunity.
3. Not directly in line with the door — at a diagonal, not head-on.
4. Desk is proportionate — larger than staff desks but not overwhelming the room.
5. No beam directly above — if unavoidable, hang a brass calabash from the beam.
Back to door: Called "no mountain" (无靠山). You will feel unsupported, miss opportunities, and be blindsided by office politics. If you cannot move the desk, place a high-backed chair and a mirror that lets you see behind you.
Facing a wall: Blocked vision means blocked career. Place an inspiring mountain landscape painting on the wall to symbolically open the space.
Under a beam: The beam presses Qi downward onto your head — headaches, stress, blocked promotions. Hang a brass calabash or install a drop ceiling.
The leader's office should be in the rearmost part of the entire office — farthest from the main entrance. This is the "mountain position" (靠山位). In traditional courtyard terms, the patriarch occupies the rearmost hall; in modern offices, the same principle applies.
| Element | Rule | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Rearmost office, corner if possible | Stability, authority, mountain support |
| Desk size | Larger than all other desks | Signals hierarchy; small desk = diminished authority |
| Facing | Face the door, at a diagonal | Receives incoming Qi and controls who enters |
| Back support | Solid wall, ideally with a high bookcase | Double mountain — stable, unwavering support |
| Wealth spot | Place citrine cluster or wealth vessel on the diagonal | Activates the Ming Cai Wei for sustained income |
| Window | To the side, not behind or directly facing | Side window = information; behind = leaking authority |
Staff seating must be uniform in direction. When employees face different directions, the office Qi fragments and team cohesion breaks down. All desks should face the same general direction — ideally toward the leader's office or the main door, depending on the office layout.
Ming Cai Wei (明财位 — Visible Wealth Position): The diagonal corner from the main entrance. This is the most accessible wealth spot. Place a healthy money tree, citrine cluster, or wealth vessel here. Keep it bright, clean, and free of clutter.
An Cai Wei (暗财位 — Hidden Wealth Position): Determined by the office sitting direction. For example, a Kan-facing office (North) has its hidden wealth position in the South, Southeast, or East. Place the company safe or important financial documents here.
Liu Nian Cai Wei (流年财位 — Annual Wealth Position): Changes yearly based on flying stars. In 2026, activate the North (6 White) and East (8 White). In 2027, activate the Southeast (8 White — primary) and Southwest (6 White — secondary).
The meeting room is where decisions are made — its feng shui directly impacts the quality of those decisions. Use a round or oval table — sharp corners create Sha Qi that triggers conflict. Rectangular tables are acceptable only if corners are rounded. The leader or host sits in the seat with a solid wall behind them, facing the door — the same command position principle applies.
• Round or oval table — eliminates power struggles inherent in rectangular tables.
• Ample natural light — dark meeting rooms breed dark decisions.
• One large plant in the corner — living Qi softens negotiation energy.
• Water feature on the East or North wall — generates wealth-generating conversations.
• Avoid placing the meeting room directly facing the toilet door — contamination of decision energy.
| Industry | Key Adjustment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Finance / Law | Metal elements; blue/black decor | Metal governs precision and authority; Water (blue/black) generates Metal in the productive cycle |
| Creative / Design | Wood elements; east-facing desk | Wood governs creativity and growth; East is the Wood palace |
| Retail / E-commerce | Bright lighting; cash register in Gen (NE) or Qian (NW) | Light = visibility = sales; Gen/Qian are Earth/Metal palaces that stabilize revenue |
| Tech / Startups | Water feature in North; open layout | Water = flow of ideas; North = Kan palace, governs wisdom and innovation |
| Health / Wellness | White + green color scheme; plants throughout | White (Metal) + Green (Wood) = cleanliness + vitality |
| Education | Wenchang pagoda in Northeast or center | Activates literary and scholarly energy; Northeast houses the 4 Green star in 2026 |
| Hospitality / F&B | Kitchen facing East or South; cashier at diagonal from door | East/South feed the fire of the kitchen (auspicious); diagonal cashier captures entering wealth Qi |
The reception desk is your company's Ming Tang (明堂) — the bright hall where first impressions form. It should be visible immediately upon entering, well-lit, and spacious. Never place the reception desk directly facing the main door — this creates a confrontational energy. Position it at a diagonal so visitors naturally turn and are guided in.
Place a citrine cluster or Pi Yao on the reception desk facing the door (head out = absorbing wealth). Keep fresh flowers — real, not fake — to signal living prosperity. A small water feature here is excellent: water governs money flow in feng shui, and the entrance is where money first enters.
